There are a myriad of fit adjustments included, along with your average primer on basic sewing.I appreciate that the patterns aren't watered down. Do be warned, if you don't like tracing, you will HATE this book. The patterns are nested Burdastyle type sheets printed front and back. The larger sizes are faded out rather than different line styles. The different pattern pieces do not overlap, so it won't be too much of a pain to deal with.","reviewRating":{"@type":"Rating","ratingValue":"5.0","bestRating":5}},{"@type":"Review","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"S***E"},"reviewBody":"I just received my book, and at first I was dismayed to see the sizes only went up to 12. I am a size 20 (working on getting smaller), but was looking forward to making some cute clothes to wear whatever size I am. I thought the size limitations should have been addressed in the description portion of the Amazon site so it would be clear. I contacted the author and she was quick to respond and explain that her size 12 fits a bust of 50.5 inches, or size 20 (but I think that means in size 20 in ready-to-wear (RTW) store bought clothes, not pattern sizing). This helps, because it is closer to my measurements (52\") and easier to make the adjustents to pattern to size up. I wear size 20 in RTW but that corresponds to a size 32 pattern. (For newbie sewers, take note, you need to shop pattern size by your measurements, not by your normal RTW size, and you probably won't like the number you end up with for a pattern! However, this is at least closer to my size and I should be able to alterate the pattern size to my measurements. This was a great relief. I am looking forward to using this book and its patterns to \"design\" myself some cute apparel.","reviewRating":{"@type":"Rating","ratingValue":"5.0","bestRating":5}},{"@type":"Review","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"K***R"},"reviewBody":"I had made probably 3 or 4 dresses before getting this book, so I'd put myself at \"confident beginner.\" Now, I wish I had started with this one! I really, REALLY hate tracing, but it really wasn't so bad with this. I just got a roll of tracing paper from the art and craft store and got to work. So far, I've made three dresses with it, all using the princess bodice and circle skirt. It's easy to modify the patterns, too, with the instructions in the book. I feel like a real seamstress with all the modifications I've been able to add! People at work have even started paying me to sew for them!I started sewing because I like full skirts and vintage-esque dresses, but they're getting more and more difficult to come by. I always felt like going through packaged patterns was daunting, and it would take me a week to make a dress. Now, I can finish one in around 6 or 7 hours. Absolutely love this book, and I would recommend it to anyone who likes to sew their own dresses. It's just SO much simpler with her patterns.","reviewRating":{"@type":"Rating","ratingValue":"5.0","bestRating":5}},{"@type":"Review","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"M***Y"},"reviewBody":"One's figure changes over time and standard patterns just don't fit any more. The idea is so tantalizing of all of the dress combinations you could make. The author is a genius and I cannot begin to imagine how much time and effort went into the making of this book. That being said, I am a barely “advanced beginner “ in sewing. This project book is not for sissies. I’ve spent 3 days getting the pattern ready to start cutting my MUSLIN prototype. Because the patterns and sizing are different you really do have to make a muslin dress first to check for sizing and whether you need to move the darts etc etc. I feel like an engineer or an architect. I am determinedly pushing on but OMG I hope this dress turns out. This book is definitely not for beginners. It looks simple but it is not. IMHO you really need to be an experienced seamstress to use this book. So, I bought this book along with several others and found this to be the least beginner friendly -- at least, not for a novice like me. I've made dog coats, neckties and zippered pouches but that's about it. I intend to try the basic bodice and basic skirt out of this book, but have found myself needing to google terminology that the book does not describe. For example, I know what interfacing is (as I've had to use it in ties), but didn't know there was \"facing\" fabric as well. The book explains how to use facing fabric, lining fabric and interfacing, but does not explain what they are (obviously lining fabric is self-explanatory but this was the first time I ever heard of facing fabric). In any event, the book is still a tiny bit too advanced for me, but I love all the dress options and the fact that they allow for a very wide range of sizes (from 32-24-34 through to 50.5-42.5-52.5), which accommodates my small frame much better than a lot of other modern dressmaking books.","reviewRating":{"@type":"Rating","ratingValue":"4.0","bestRating":5}},{"@type":"Review","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"A***R"},"reviewBody":"really good book, many dress variations, good descriptions, options for basics and more tailored designs too","reviewRating":{"@type":"Rating","ratingValue":"5.0","bestRating":5}},{"@type":"Review","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"A***A"},"reviewBody":"so much possibilities it is overwhelming. definitely my best sewing book.","reviewRating":{"@type":"Rating","ratingValue":"5.0","bestRating":5}},{"@type":"Review","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"A***R"},"reviewBody":"This book looks great. I am a very experienced knitter, and have found this a useful reference book that even includes cast ons and bind offs I have never seen nor used before. The written directions are clear and for those of us who are visual learners, they are accompanied by very nice, (large) easily \"read\" illustrations. There is also a sharp photo of every technique which is easy to see and helps you to know if this is a cast-on or bind-off that would work for the project you are undertaking. (See images on the site). I have tried several of the techniques prior to writing this review just to be sure that the directions make sense and everything went smoothly.I particularly like the three tables at the beginning of the book. One gives a list of purposes for cast ons (and one for bind offs), so that if you are looking for a durable cast-on or an elastic bind off, you know which type to use. The third table is the best, because it lists cast ons and bind offs that will create matching edges (...And you have a choice of nine different types!)Although the book advertises (more than) 120 cast ons and (more than) 80 bind-offs, one should remember that it includes many variations on techniques along with cast ons/bind offs for very particular uses, so you should not expect 120 cast ons for every occasion. It is a strength that this book addresses particular needs (as well as general ones), for example circular cast ons, sock toe cast ons, two stranded knitting cast ons, decorative bind offs, etc.The book is spiral bound and large (pages are 8.5 by 11\" (21 x 27.5cm)) so those that found the pictures unclear or too small in the book on 54 Cast Ons/Bind Off should be much happier. For me it is almost too large (I would like to carry a smaller version in my knitting bag, but also understand those that want the larger clearer illustrations.) The format is clean and very nice. Martingale Press has done a very nice job on the styling and printing of the book and the book can be opened from the front and the back without that problem of pages getting caught on the spirals. The index also seems to be quite thorough. You can look up cast ons/bind offs by name as well as function. (Elastic, lace bind offs, Judy's Magic cast on, reversible cast ons (etc.)Summary Pros:Lots of cast ons and bind offs.Clear instructions (both words and images)A photo for every primary technique.Sprial bound (such that book can be opened either way without leaves catching.)Tables for bind off/ cast on purposes and matching edges.Good index Cons:(Perhaps?) Too large to take along (for some). The examples are in different colors, so it’s colorful all set against a pristine white backdrop. The author is home taught, as in her grandmother taught her how to knit. That’s the best kind, but don’t feel bad if you learned in school or had to take classes in a yarn shop or a friend taught you. Any way you learned is valid as long as you learned, feel secure in your technique, and get good results. If you don’t feel you have either or both casting on or binding off nailed down or you’re looking for a different technique or edge, this is the book for you.Ms. Sease speaks in an easy to understand style that makes you feel as if you are sitting with her over tea and learning the techniques from her in person. She does start out with a few charts. First to list the types of cast ons, then the bind offs. Then she lists the pairs that go together to give you matching edges. I thought that would be a particularly helpful list for future projects. From the lists, she jumps right into how to do each of the cast ons and then each of the bind offs. She has them broken down into categories, such as those that start from a slip knot, long tail, and such. She shares the advantages and disadvantages of each and has very clear illustrations showing how each is done. I felt between her worded description of the stitches and the illustrations there wasn’t a technique I wouldn’t be able to do.I bought this book because I couldn’t find the stretchy bind off I needed on Pinterest for my current project and I really needed to get it off the needles. I found this book on Amazon at a reasonable price and downloaded it immediately. I skimmed through it looking for my stretchy bind off and finished my project. Then I went back and read through the whole book. I was so excited about bind offs when I finished. I want to try some of the fancier ones sometime. There are some really pretty ones that create picot, curled, or looped edges that I thought I’d like to try just for the fun of it. I highly recommend this book whether you are a beginning knitter or an expert knitter. Just imagine, 211 ways to start or stop!","reviewRating":{"@type":"Rating","ratingValue":"5.0","bestRating":5}},{"@type":"Review","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"H***."},"reviewBody":"When we first learn to knit, we typically learn one way to cast on. We keep using that same cast on, project after project, year after year. The same with bind offs. We use the same old one on every project. Then we run across a book like this - with hundreds of different ways to begin and end projects - some for socks with the stretchiness needed to get over the heel and the recovery needed to snug back up. Some for lace - so that the effect of the cast on blends into the pattern in the shawl. Some for sweaters with the sturdiness an edge needs that will get a lot of wear. This is a terrific book. The best way to use it, I think, is with needles and yarn in hand. The diagrams and instructions are clear, but sometimes, instructions don't click until you are actually doing the cast on or bind off. The book is spiral bound inside a hard cover. You can keep it in a knitting bag without the spiral catching your yarn, but at the same time, you can lay it open and it stays open so your hands can get on with what they are doing.","reviewRating":{"@type":"Rating","ratingValue":"5.0","bestRating":5}},{"@type":"Review","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"G***A"},"reviewBody":"The title promises 211 ways to begin and end your project. I ordered the book since I wanted to have all in one place but I found out that I am often unable to work following instructions in this book and I rather go back to my notes and web sources. What I don't like about this book:- step-by-step drawings have no arrows to show direction of movements. You cannot guess what to do just following the pictures. You have to read and the text as well, every time, and it is slow.- I would prefer much deeper information about the individual COs and BOs. I wish the book included at least the \"right\" side and \"wrong\" side photos. It includes only the \"right\" side view. For example, if I use my favorite CO with stockinette, it curls more if I CO and purl the first row (WS) than if I CO and knit the first row (RS).I like the three tables at the beginning of the book. What I miss are the page references. Let's say I search for a CO that prevents curling. The table offers several ones but I have to look them up in the index at the end of the book to get their page numbers.I am not an experienced knitter but I really like to know how things work and I enjoy books that are well organized and are written by authors who have lots to say about the subject, technically. And if the book is to be an overview, a time-saver, then it should have really clear step-by-step drawings, be smaller in size and if spiral-bound then better quality so that you can turn pages easily. The layout could be more compact to save pages and arranged so that even if the book was smaller the drawings remained the same size.","reviewRating":{"@type":"Rating","ratingValue":"2.0","bestRating":5}},{"@type":"Review","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"C***A"},"reviewBody":"This book was recommended through an online class I took and it's a must have for any knitters bookshelf. They are well described with good illustrations and the author also gives suggestions for when you should use them and also provides the matching bind off.I'm sure I'll be using it for many years to come.","reviewRating":{"@type":"Rating","ratingValue":"5.0","bestRating":5}},{"@type":"Review","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"K***N"},"reviewBody":"This really shows you a load of differnt ways of casting on and off. I have found this vital to exoand my repertoire for less stretchy wools, circular knitting etc. this book certainly does the job of explaining all your options very well. They are all shown in pictures and are very easy for a beginner to pick up, even if you leave off some of the more complex ones for a year or so. If you have ever finished a jumper and found it unwearable as the neck or bottom is too tight, then you need a book like this, and it is the best I have found so far. However, it doesnt inspire you beyond the basics much in the same way as Nicky Epsteins books on decorative edgings, and I wouldve liked an easier way of searching for edgings by flexibility etc, hence the four stars. In summary, a good solid book for an essential oart of the knitting process which is so often left out.","reviewRating":{"@type":"Rating","ratingValue":"4.0","bestRating":5}},{"@type":"Review","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"K***N"},"reviewBody":"I know and use about 6 different cast ons. and about the same on my knitting machines but this book really opened my eyes. There are good clear illustrations.I have looked at this book on an e-reader and my Kindle Fire and I have to say the pictures and illustrations are clearer on the Kindle Fire.It showed a Picot hem but not the one I learnt on my knitting machine and do on my hand knitting - with a thinner yarn the same colour as the main yarn on the back of the picot hem. Petra Hoeksema has been crafting since elementary school. When she turned four, her grandmother gave her a toy sewing machine and her first project was a dress for her sister, which she even wore. She taught herself to embroider and crochet with the help of books and magazines borrowed from the library. And with the help of her great grandmother’s old sewing machine, she learned how to sew clothes. Burning out from her job in the technology sector, Petra turned back to crafting and hasn't stopped since. She started up a blog to get in touch with other creative types and in 2010 started an online store that sold creative materials. She has contributed to Mollie Makes and continues to teach herself more techniques including felting, weaving, crocheting, knitting, sewing, woodworking, graphic design, and doll making.

Craftiness is happiness for Lidy Nooij. She has been creating for her entire life. When she was twelve, she got her first sewing machine and started sewing clothes for her dolls, decorated jars with embroidered bits of felt, and made perfume from rose petals. At school, she organized crafting afternoons with friends for other kids. Lidy's crafting is multi-faceted and focuses on many techniques and she is always learning new ones. Over the years, she has participated in a variety of workshops on things including crocheting, leather tanning, lace making, painting, quilting, and dressmaking. Petra is self-taught, and enjoys the process most of all. For the past few years, she has been a member of the Craft Kitchen team. Together with other Craft Kitchen ladies, she attends conferences and blogs at www.craftkitchen.nl.

Miriam Catshoek started to sew her own pants, knit simple sweaters, and alter clothes from a young age. In her house, you got your own sewing machine on your sixteenth birthday! She draws inspiration from the piles of fashion, interior design and styling magazines, and books she buys (for which she continues to have a weakness). She enjoys working with paper, stamps, and punches to make cards, cool labels, and packaging. Her style is basic and robust with nothing fiddly, no complicated patterns, just beautiful yarn in simple patterns in her favorite colors of grey, old rose, and green. Miriam usually has at least four projects going at once time.

As a beginner with cross stitch, it is a bit overwhelming to look at the patterns or attempt to start them, but once I get them started they are great. This is a counted cross stitch book, though. I find so far I prefer counted cross stitch so it is nice for me to work on.This is an excellent thing to do if you have ADHD. It is a very constructive thing to do and helps me focus on the things going on around me. I have been crocheting for decades and I can honestly say that while many of the designs are very simple, they are a starting point. There are also designs that inspire other ideas. While it is clear from the front cover that there is at a minimum one pattern that calls for items other than yarn, it would be more advantageous to indicate that on the cover. I also love that this is available on the Kindle Cloud from any device. I can access these pattern from anywhere. While there are designs that I am not particularly fond of does not make this book any less worthy of the five-star rating. The patterns are well written and use standard terminology. Many of these patterns can be up-sized by changing either the hook size, or the yarn size, so you can make them from 0 month to toddler size. Other patterns need to be up-sized by adding extra stitches. Either way, you get the opportunity to make cute baby clothes, so it's all good. There are small projects, too, that can be done as accessories to your projects, to use leftover yarn, or as a complete gift made from the heart.I love making crocheted baby projects as they are really fast and I feel happy and accomplished.
