Hello, I left the original 8 Gb in. I just changed their location front to back (i.e. Moved the 4 Gb sticks to the empty slots and replaced them with the 16Gb sticks. Rebooted, checked system information and it showed I had 40 Gb of memory. I would definitely keep them in. Every kb is a bonus. Hope this helped.

As long as this is the correct size and pin configuration for your computer, it will work. Although this is advertized for a desktop imac, this particular ram stick is 260 pins and sized for laptops. You’ll have to research what size goes in your computer.
