Excellent

Bought this to replace an old Bodum cafetiere and it is great. The plastic cradle to hold the glass jug helps to protect it and is very secure. Excellent product.

Great French Press

Very sturdy, looks good and works really well. And it doesn’t drip! Honestly very impressed with this.

Bodum classic is best.

I've tried 'other brand' cafetieres in the past. They've invariably proved to be false economy, with low quality plastic, glass which seems to suffer easy damage and a press which, if plastic, seems to taint the taste. This Bodum is, for our household, ideal. It produces 4 mugs of coffee; 2 each to start the day. It's convenient, good quality and easy to clean. Plain and simple, looks good and does the job.

Follow a system and it's fine

This is a good little French press (or cafetière) rated as 4-cup capacity, or 500ml in real money. According to the Taylors Coffee website a litre of water requires 60g of ground coffee, so the 'normal' dose for this nifty gizmo would be 30g. You vary this to taste. (Look for 'Coffee Science' in the 'Blog' section of the Taylors Coffee website.) I use a supermarket 'special' coffee when I want caffeine and Taylors Decaffé when I don't. The good folk at Taylors use a water process to extract the caffeine. (I am not on their payroll; I just like their style.)It works like all of them, but there are some points to note. I mention them because some other reviewers seem to have been caught out and in one case suffered a scalding water 'event' requiring a visit to A&E. No joke.(A) General safety- Don't use a fine grind: it will block the mesh filter, which will act like a solid metal piston inside the glass cylinder. You will force the plunger down, and pressure will build up. Guess what happens next.- Don't bang a full load of boiling water into the cold vessel. The glass is supposed to be resistant to thermal shock, but why chance it?(B) Making the coffee- Warm up your Bodum (that sounds odd) by sloshing some warm water inside it.- Heave in the coffee, weighing it if you want to titrate it to the weight that suits your palate over a few days of experimentation. Your assistant, Igor, will help you with this :)- Add the water. This should *not* be boiling. Back in the 1960s Scandinavian researchers reckoned that boiling water + coffee = increased risk of gut problems, so get the water hot but not boiling. (In my opinion this also retains more of the oxygen.) The 'Coffee Science' link above suggests a range of temperatures, although you'd need a thermometer as well to get it right. Up to you. Maybe Igor has one.- Stir the mixture after 30 seconds or so to encourage the coffee to sink - don't use metal (the glass is thin) - then install the plunger mechanism at the top of the glass and put the lid into position. Don't push anything. Just wait ...- ... and while you are waiting make sure that the little slits in the plastic lid are over the spout. Bodum boobed here - there's no mark on the lid to show when it is in the right position.- After your brewing time, depress the plunger. Tell it you don't love it any more. I use a timer set to 3min 30sec - but again it is a matter of taste. Don't over-brew, though, or you'll get bitter coffee. Yuk.- Pour immediately. *While pouring, hold the lid.* You'd do it with a teapot, and you need to do it with this. The plastic cradle gets soft with the heat and the glass vessel may otherwise slide out like a torpedo and you'll be on your way to A&E. The more expensive version of this with the metal cradle may not have this problem. This Bodum is a good size if you have a pint coffee mug. If you need spares, they are on offer on several websites: check their prices for things like filter mesh. Amazon can sometimes be beaten.

A good buy.

I have a new love for Bodum products.I bought the 4 cup French press first. Not realising when it claims to be 4 cup, it actually referring to the small coffee cups, bare this in mind when purchasing one. But a four cup does make two good mugs full.So I've upgraded to the eight cup French press for when guests arrive and want a good mug of coffee. It's lightweight, easy to clean, the inner glass is removable for washing. The filter is a metal mesh and wheel. Easy to wash. To take it apart, simply unscrew from the plunger stick base.New mesh filters can be bought fairly cheaply online. Although the mesh doesn't need replacing unless it becomes damaged. The inner glass can be bought as a replacement if you damage yours, as can the complete plunger. My only negative is the lid. When using the plunger, hold onto the lid as it sometimes pops off.
