Holy Stone HS110D: A super fun, easy to fly beginner drone

The media could not be loaded. I’d have to say that I am very pleasantly surprised at how fun and easy the HS110D drone is to fly. Let me start off by saying that I have a drone family (both in the literal and figurative sense). We have a fleet of tiny indoor drones, and some really nice outdoor drones. I say we are a drone family in the literal and figurative sense because my children (4) and I love to fly the drones together outdoors, and the figurative part of the drone family is the “family” of drones we have between indoor and outdoor (a total of 8 drones).I purchased the HS110D because I wanted something that was super easy to fly, and could be flown indoors and out. The reviews were quite good, so I bit the bullet, not too hard because it was very reasonably priced relative to all of its features (~$55).It came in a premium box that included a lot of nice accessories. The HS110D came with 2 batteries, extra props/prop guards and landing gear, a comprehensive manual (which tends to be sorely lacking these days because they expect you to find it online, or the manual is super tiny), a nice little log/notebook (which actually has a nice, premium look of rawhide leather), and, what I liked the most was a “cheat sheet” overlay for the remote control. This drone is fun to fly, and super easy to learn. I really wanted this for my youngest daughter to feel safe and comfortable flying. And this checked all of the boxes.Taking her out for a flight was easy, and she took nice photos and video, responsive to controls, and decent battery life (for such a tiny battery). For ~$55, she packs quite a punch. Knowing that she was only ~$55 really helped me to set expectations. The photos and videos were decent quality, and I loved how she had the ability to do flips. I do note that because it lacks GPS and/or an optical flow sensor, much more user input is needed to keep her in control (I had to remind my kids, as they are used to my other drones holding their position because of the sensors and GPS). I think this is a great, entry level drone that checks the boxes of:1) fun2) easy to fly/control3) inexpensive4) decent photos/video (again, for a ~$55 drone).5) great user manual and accessoriesThere is not much I would want them to change or improve in drone in this price range. My only ask is that there was an external charger for the batteries (Unfortunately you have to charge the batteries in the drone)This is my second Holy Stone drone, and a reason to love Holy Stone is the customer service. It is second to none. They are responsive, understanding, helpful, and go way above and beyond to ensure that customer needs are met. They epitomize, “the customer is always right”. With the knowledge that Customer service is top notch and responsive, I will continue to come back to Holy Stone. They have a place in my drone family. So if you are looking for a great first/beginner drone (or simply a fun and easy to use indoor/outdoor drone), look no further! Here are a bunch of photos and a video I took. If you come into this with the right expectations (this is a ~$55 drone beginner drone, and not a professional or hobbyist level drone), you will have a great drone and a great experience.

Start here, master this quadcopter then upgrade to video/racing drones

This is a long and honest review, so keep that in mind as you read this.the TL:DR version - Absolutely worth the price if you're looking for a beginner drone. It's a great drone to ensure that you have the dexterity and ability to fly. Its fun, easy to use and you wont find anything better at the price point.Long version:Some background on me, I fly video drones for video projects and racing drones for fun (even though they're technically racing drones I actually do more freestyle flying). To start, I bought this drone because I wanted to find something that I could use for a "kid flight school" and also just have fun at my nearby park without the worry of losing/breaking one of my really expensive drones.I wasnt really sure what to expect since I have bought way too many sub $100 drones and ended up returning them after the 1st flight.Once I opened the box, I was surprised that it looks like a baby version of the Phantom 4, which is not a bad thing. It actually looks good, and I was so happy with all of the extras and spare parts that it brought. One pretty fun surprise was the notebook that came with it, which I have my kid use as a flight log (since a good drone pilot always keeps track of this).Getting started is pretty easy:- Charge the Drone- Read the Manual while the drone is charging- Grab 4 x AA Batteries for the controller- Make sure everything is tightened (which is was but my experience with other drones has been bad)- Once drone is done being charged, press a few buttons and you're ready to flyAs an experienced pilot - I flew the drone indoors, and for the most part, it was stable and did what I wanted. I kind of made it into an indoor quarantine game to be honest.I also flew the drone outdoors during a calm day, and it worked as good as a more expensive drone. I also got to use some of the added features, and it actually worked pretty well. However, when the wind started blowing, it was time to land and wait for the calm. The app options also seemed to work surprisingly well, but I'll be honest and say, I did not spend too much time on them.I like to start with the bad:- The Camera quality could be better, its not bad, but its not great. It's good enough for some standard quality stuff, but again, its a sub $100 drone.- Outdoor stability was good as long as the wind is calm, but as soon as there is a strong gust it does sway a bit. This is more than likely because its really light, but its one thing to keep in mind.- Lack of warning beeps or sensors. Since i've been spoiled, these are features that I missed on this drone, but it does make sure that the pilot works on skill.- Radio distance/range - I'd say about 100-150 ft would be the max comfort zone for this drone.- AA batteries for the controller - I get why, and that batteries are cheap, but ugh.Now for the Good:- Quality - its plastic, but it held up really well when my kid crashed it. We brushed off the leaves, and it took off right after. This is a huge deal for us.- Flight time was about 8 minutes per battery, which for the size and charge time is really really good.- I already mentioned that the drone is really light (which kind of sucks with the wind), but it makes it really easy for transport. I basically put it back in the box it came in, then into a backpack and I can ride my bike to the park.- The included hardware - This is actually awesome, and I cant stress this enough. It even included prop protectors, which is extra for the larger more expensive drones.- The app features are actually kind of cool, I think im going to check out what the next model up brings- It was so easy to use, I really didnt even have to read the manual, but im glad I did to learn about the added app features.- PRICE! Seriously for this price, this is the best bang for buck. This drone is not for shooting movies, or racing. This is the perfect drone to master the mechanics of how a quadcopter works! Before you upgrade to the next steps use this drone and get comfortable. We've all heard of someone who lost or crashed a $1K drone, and TRUST ME if you start here, you'll know better! Happy Flying!
