Hello, No, you did not buy just paper strips. These papers assess peoples abilities to test N-PROP. Since this is a genetically linked ability it is possible that the ten of you tried it and were related share similar tasting genes. There are also different substances used to determine if someone is a supertaster. This specific test is linked to a study (Bartoshuk, L. M., V. B. Duffy, I. J. Miller, PTC/PROP Tasting: Anatomy, Psychophysics, and Sex Effects. Physiol Behav, 1994; 56: 1165-1171.) that tied n-prop to supertasters. While this study represents one method for testing, there are others who believe the ability to test PTC, sodium benzoate, and thiourea determine if one is a supertaster. Q: Does this test for prop behave the same way as the ptc test strips?

Yes, PROP strips are used to test for bitter taste. Super tasters have a strong reaction and find the strips to be extremely bitter. For non-tasters the strip has no flavor other than that of a piece of wet filter paper. Some people have an intermediate reaction. They can taste something but it is not aversive. So like PTC strips, PROP can discriminate super-tasters from non-tasters. However, I am not sure if the PTC strips can identify the intermediate group. Also, it's my understanding that PROP may be a safer chemical compared to PTC.
