Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters Volume 2 Paperback – January 17, 2012

Seriously? How can you object? The artwork alone of each of the monsters is enough to make this purchase really worth it. Seeing the parody version of Jersey Shore and Lady Gaga die is another plus. Seriously, forget the Jersey Shore. Plot line is not grade A and they are making world/military leaders look relatively stupid in this series thus far but it's still a pretty good comic. A few pretty good laugh points and some pretty good action scenes really help with the stale plot. If you're a Godzilla fan I think this is a worthwhile addition to your collection. They do a pair of survivors that make for a pretty decent sub plot. The plot thickens too...I can't tell ya how but just know that it does. Let's not forget about the Art Gallery in the back of the comic; again, that alone made the purchase worth it for me. I like this and I think it's worth a buy if you're a Godzilla fan. If you're not...maybe I should point you to the My Little Pony comics or something.

Being Vol-2 of this series it continues the main themes from the start. Man is simply outclassed and too arrogant to think things through properly and quality is a lost art. Forgetting to armor both sides of the armor because you didn't think it was important? Too funny?

This is a really good and developing story, my book came a bit damaged but that's ok since it wasn't much at all.

Kind of preachy.

First off, the monsters. The story is very bland, monster in places for no reason. At least in Final Wars they gave us the context that the monster had been attacking for centuries and later it gave us an exact reason for all the monsters acting as they did. This reads like it was written by a twelve year old who just watched a couple Godzilla movies, or even just one who played a video game about Godzilla. I say the latter for it lacks all understanding of the monsters. Final Wars isn't a bad film but, this book shares its problem, a story with too many monsters suffers from a lack of focus and screen time for its creatures.Another thing is the people within the story. Yes they are all very bland but, i think i could deal with it if that was their only fault. They don't act like people. There reactions are nonsensical, sure some Godzilla movies, normally from the dubbing, have clunky dialogue but, the meaning behind the lines are normally a human and understandable idea. People shouting lines that could be replaced by "I hope this doesn't have a horribly ironic outcome," without really changing anything. And the president, who is named Babak Khan Ogden is so in your face about how he is Obama but not actually its annoying. And for some reason his character gives speeches on the economic crisis during a monster rampage. Did FDR talk about any other problems when he addressed pearl harbor, no because he was human and not a joke. This story has a mean-spirited political atmosphere without actually taking a clear side. Its unnecessary and annoying.

These books try way to hard to wag a finger at American Decadence in the most ham fisted way possible. Of course our interesting protagonist is above all the savage idiots trying to survive in this kaiju apocalypse, can't even have him look even a little bit flawed.Meanwhile, the only human characters of interest, the two psychic twins, get very little screen time, and monster battles are short and infrequent, and we don't get much closure on them.The only reason I would recommend reading the Kingdom of Monster series to anyone is if you are an absolute stickler for collecting a full continuity, as this does eventually lead into the Godzilla ongoing and then Rulers of the Earth, both of which are much better comics.

Big G fan here. Not as impressed with this series as I wanted to be. This being mainly due to the writing which drops in quality and the series continues.

Für meine allgemeine Einleitung zu den Godzilla-Comics von IDW und einer Übersicht aller erhältlichen Geschichten, siehe meine Rezension zu  Kingdom of Monsters Volume 1 .Wer Volume 1 noch nicht gelesen hat und sich nicht spoilern lassen möchte, kann sich in dieser Rezension auch auf das Fazit beschränken.Kingdom of Monsters Volume 2 besteht wieder aus knapp 100 Seiten und fasst die Einzelausgaben #5 bis #8 zusammen. Eric Powell und Tracy Marsh sind weiterhin für das Skript verantwortlich, während Victor Santos nun für die Zeichnungen übernimmt.Nach dem Kampf von Godzilla und Anguirus wurde Los Angeles komplett zerstört. Die Versuche der US-Regierung, zumindest eines der Monster auszulöschen, haben abgesehen von der Tötung von Zivilisten keine merklichen Auswirkungen. Sergeant Woods versucht währenddessen sich von den Großstädten und den Monstern fernzuhalten, wobei er ein verwaistes Mädchen aufgabelt. Hauptgefahr sind allerdings nicht die Monster, sondern die menschlichen Mitbürger, da die Gesellschaft langsam den Bach runtergeht und jeder für sich selbst kämpft. Gleichzeitig schmieden die finsteren Zwillinge mit ihrer Marionette Battra Pläne, um ihre Herrschaft noch stärker auszuweiten.Anfangs wirkt die Handlung immer noch wie ein zusammenhangloses Handlungsgerüst, aber dann kriegt man doch die Kurve und konzentriert sich auf Woods, womit man endlich einen Protagonisten bekommt, mit dem man ein wenig mitfiebern kann. Tiefgründige Charaktere sucht man natürlich vergebens, aber wir sind hier ja schließlich in einem Monstercomic. Wirklich lieblos in die Handlung geschleudert wurde leider King Ghidorah. Sein Auftritt ist völlig irrelevant für die Geschichte und genau so nebensächlich, wie er auftaucht, verschwindet er auch wieder. Allerdings bekommt man nun ein paar mehr Monsterkämpfe geboten, die im Groben und Ganzen auch zu unterhalten wissen. Die unterhaltsamen politischen Kommentare sind auch wieder mit dabei (dieses Mal kriegen sogar die Deutschen kurz ihr Fett weg), stehen aber nicht mehr so im Fokus.Ein dickes Minus gibt es leider für die Zeichnungen von Victor Santos, welche um einiges schwächer sind als noch die von Phil Hester aus Volume 1. Die Monster gehen noch in Ordnung, wenn auch hier ebenfalls Abzüge zu verzeichnen sind, aber die menschlichen Charaktere wirken teilweise wie lieblos dahingeklatscht. Die Handlung bietet eigentlich eine interessante anarchische Ausgangssituation. Um dieser Stimmung gerecht zu werden, hätte der Comic allerdings viel düsterer ausfallen müssen.Fazit:Man bekommt endlich einen Protagonisten, wenn auch die Charaktere eher eindimensional bleiben, und darf sich auf mehr Monsterkämpfe freuen. Der Zeichenstil lässt allerdings zu wünschen übrig und passt sich nicht genug der Handlung an, welche zwar nette Ansätze aufweist, aber ebenfalls mit dramaturgischen Schwächen zu kämpfen hat. So bleibt nur ein zwiespältiges Gesamtbild mit verschenktem Potential. Ob Volume 3 das Ruder rumreißen kann, muss sich zeigen, ist aber zu bezweifeln.Weiter geht es mit  Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters Volume 3 .
