Anyone find a hood or method for keeping the cats from kicking litter out? I love the sifting but now I have to deal with litter outside the box.
How much litter do you add? How do I get the sifter back under the litter after emptying it?
Can this be used with non-clumping pine litter?
Has anyone tried using this with pine/cedar/walnut pellets? The pellets would need to stay in the top pan and the sawdust fall through.

Perfect for the Pine pellets and sifting

Great deal for these. You get two bottoms and a sifter. I use them for the pine pellets from Tractor Suppy. I put the sifter backwards so there is a gap between the bottom of the sifter and the bottom pan. This way, I shake the whole thing and dissolved pellets sift to the bottom. I only use one of the two bottoms. When cleaning, I shake while holding the top sifter high a bit to create more space between the top and bottom, to get the pee dust through to the bottom. Then place the sifter with now just whole pellets on another pan while I dump and rinse the bottom. Scoop poop from the top sifter. Been using these for 10+ years. I scrub them weekly and because i have extra bottoms, they are great for extra pans to have. I have 9 cats, the largest is 12lbs the size is perfect for them. There is a stainless steel version of these I plan on migrating to, that has a larger gap between the top sifter and bottom pan. For now, these are great.

Best boxes to use for pine pellets!!!

I use horse pine pellets from the feed supply store as litter. It's the best and cheapest litter I've found yet. Sifting boxes are the only way to go. I *LOVE* these boxes. You just put the sifter into an empty box, dump from the dirty box into the empty one onto the sifter, and then sift away. I pick the poop out after I do this process. You are left with the remaining clean, whole pellets, and the broken down dirty ones are sifted out. Just add more fresh pellets to top off. The one thing to note is they are a bit small, so I just use both of them set next to each other, and then consolidate to sift it out. The size is not a deal breaker at all, in fact it makes it easier to sift effectively. These boxes make a cheap litter system even cheaper. It's a game changer and I highly recommend you get it if you use pellets.

Smart concept, works well. On the smaller side and some unexpected cleaning necessary

I've scooped litter boxes my entire life, so I've become accustomed to it. However, other people in the house are not thrilled with the concept, so I figured a sifting box would solve the problem. In short, the answer is yes, but it's not perfect. I'll bullet my pros/cons.Pros:- If you use it like a normal litter box, you basically get two litter boxes and a sifter for almost no cost.- The sifter works well. It's going to let the smaller pellets or broken clumps through, but that'll be taken care of if you are properly replacing all of the litter routinely. (Best for your cat's health)- It is built well. The bins are not flimsy.Cons:- Like many are saying, this is on the smaller side. Would definitely not recommend for more than one cat. My 11 year old, 10 lb Tortie seems a bit scrunched in it compared to what we've used in the past.- The lift, sift, cycle, repeat system is a good idea, but if you aren't used to regularly washing out the bins, you wont like this. Once you cycle through, the unused bin sits in pieces that have been dirtied with soiled litter. As you continue to cycle, it will rub off on the outside of the bin, so it gets messy pretty quickly.Personally, I will keep scooping the litter and my family can use the sifter. I clean the litter box frequently anyway. It's a good idea and works as it is supposed to. It just is a bit small and requires some unexpected cleaning on the outside of each bin after a couple rotations.

GREAT for pine pellet litter box!!!!

We are a cat loving family, and have 3. I bought this litter box after being incredibly frustrated with the horrible ongoing litter box smell in our home, plus the fact that we spend so much money every month on cat litter. We tried many sprays, powders, and scented scoopable litters, but nothing got rid of the smell. We were also tired of stepping on litter around the litter box constantly regardless of the fact that we had a fully enclosed litter box and would sweep around it more than once a day.How to:Purchase "Pine Pellet Bedding". We got a 40lb bag from Tractor Supply for $5.99. Line the bottom tray with a garbage bag (our normal drawstring tall kitchen bags work for this). Fill the top tray with the pine pellets. In order to make this work, you have to put some wood chunks or something similar, on the bottom tray under the plastic bag liner (see pic). Just make sure the wood is thick enough to ensure there is a couple of inches between the two trays. Each time you scoop the box (for poop), you shake the top tray around and all of the "urine dust" falls and is collected in the bottom tray. When the cat/s urinate in the box, it causes the pellets to immediately reduce to a dust. We have been using this set up for over a week and still not had to change out the plastic bag liner in the bottom tray, there is zero urine scent. The best part of this set up, in my opinion, is the fact that you never have to change out all of the pellets. You just keep adding new pellets in as needed. With our old traditional litter box set up, I would have to dump all of the litter at least once a week and refill due to the odor.We have been using this set up for over a week and I have not smelled any cat urine smell whatsoever! When the cat/s poop, that has to be scooped out and tossed like in a normal litter box- because the poop does not get covered in litter, it does smell a little worse than a traditional litter box. There is a light pine smell due to the pellets, and overall the box smells so much better than our old traditional box (but when the cat/s poop, you want to get it out as soon as you can due to smell). I occasionally find some pellets that have been kicked out of the box but nothing compared to the amount of litter that would be kicked out throughout each day- and this is an open box as opposed to our old enclosed box.My experience with this set up has been GREAT. I wouldn't even think about going back to our old litter box set up. We will also be saving so much money every month it's ridiculous.Maybe now we can get a couple more cats? LOL.

Best bang for your buck

I was really skeptical if this would work or not because I like to use wood pellet litter (because it’s biodegradable and I try to be good when I can) but this is advertised for clumping litter. I saw all those expensive metal ones say they work with the pellet kind, and I wasn’t trying to spend all that, so I just went for it. I’m happy to say it did work! I knew I would have to still scoop the poop out but that’s way easier/faster than having to clean the whole thing every time. Definitely would recommend!
