Teaching Phonics & Word Study in the Intermediate Grades, 3rd Edition

The author provides ANOTHER practical and inclusive resource for reading teachers of students who are not reading on grade level in 3-6 grades. Wiley Blevins has provided teachers, Instructional Coaches & Administrators an amazing handbook to scaffold their planning for explicit, systematic instruction phonics instruction. Each chapter is rich with explicit examples and a wealth of resources.

I am a huge fan of Blevins in all things phonics. I also own his "Differentiating Phonics Instruction for Maximum Impact" book and needed a companion for older kids. This was perfect for that! I teach college students who will be teachers and needed very practical tips for them entering classrooms right now. These books are full of practical tips that can be implemented the next day.

This is amazing for any teacher or homeschooler to brush up on phonic skills.

Great book to use for upper elementary.

Absolutely a fantastic resource for anyone teaching phonemic awareness, phonics, and morphology to students who are ready to move past primary skills in these areas.Blevins clearly explains the pedagogy and then offers practical methods for assessment, planning, and executing instruction.I cannot recommend this book enough!

There are some great updates in the beginning of the book, but the remaining part/majority of the book is the same content as in the first 2 editions, which I already have. I was looking for some lesson plan templates for whole group instruction, or the word study to be broken up into appropriate grade levels so teachers could follow a scope & sequence - but it doesn't contain either one of those.

I was excited to see the new version of a good classic updated for middle school and advanced phonics/word study. I already began reading the book and it complements the Science of Reading well.
