Super Alcohol Markers, but at a steep price
I was gifted some copic Sketch by an American friend, and I was delighted. I then invested in the more reasonably priced Ciao set to build my collection.I'm particularly fond of the pastel shades, as they make some splendid transitional hues. It's like watercolour tones, minus the water, drying time or fuss. They're a lovely alcohol marker that blends beautifully, and they also seem to mix well with a range of other quality alcohol based markers, such as Docraft Artiste Dual Tip Marker (which has clearly taken inspiration from Copics). They have no smell, unlike the once popular Prisma markers. The ink doesnt leak (unlike Docraft Artiste which can on occasion), and the ink doesnt transfer to your hands. It dries very fast. There are two main types: The Copic Sketch, and the Copic Ciao. The difference? Price, basically. Both the sketch and the ciao are the same ink inside the pen. The Sketch is directed towards professional artists, as the barrel is refillable (apparently, but Ive not tried), there is a wider Sketch colour range, and the pen itself just feels more expensive. However, both pens are the same within, and the difference is merely superficial. They have the same dual-tip nibs (brush and chisel). They lay down colour the same way, and Ciao and Sketch blend with each other. I have a mixture of both, and honestly, if you want bang for your buck, get the Ciao version. The colours of the Ciao match the same codes on their Sketch counterparts. Both have caps that will click onto the other end of the barrel. No lost lids. The Sketch maybe lasts a little bit longer before drying out, but not enough that I find myself caring. My only grumble about the Ciao is that the lids dont have the colour code on them, so when I put them in my horizontal display rack (not the case they come in), I can only guess the ink colour from the lid colour. However, it IS a close match to the actual ink colour within. The sketch has a coloured tip AND the colour code printed big and bold on the lid, so it's easier to locate the exact hue you want. Ideal for professionals. The clear hard case the markers come in is very useful for display and storage. Personally I prefer a horizontal display, but the clear case still works well, and you can grab the pen, no fuss, no rummaging or fighting with elastic loops. And since it comes with a clear lid, the pens have that added protection from drying out. The case does not inherently suit transporting to college/Uni, as the top doesnt click shut. But a few elastic bands solves that! Still beats those annoying cases with the elastic band loops that hold the pens in place (how fiddly are those?)There is also a clear copic blender. This is basically a clear alcohol pen, that 'erases' any colour (though not completely by any means). Why is it called a blender? Honestly I dont know! It doesnt blend, it just fades out the colour. A handy pen to have if you go over the line, or dab on a colour that's too saturated and so you want to fade it out. Some packs include a Copic liner pen. Ive yet to appreciate any benefit to this liner pen over any other quality liner, like the UniPin. But the copic black liner doesnt bleed when copic markers are applied over it. Thumbs up.Any copic, Sketch or Ciao will please an artist, but the price is steep. Chose based on what is important to you.If the seller is located in Japan, you WILL attract about £20 in tax duty, so factor that in to your spend, and the slower shipping time.
