Q: Has anyone tried these with a thick phone case, like the Otterbox? Does the C part go in properly?

I have a fairly thick case, not an OtterBox but it has the hard inner frame and rubbery exterior with a flap over the charge port, and it works. That was honestly my concern when I got them, and was pleasantly surprised. There's also a little extra room, so it's not tight right up against it. I know some cases are thicker than mine, but it will likely fit.
